Shocking garden news

beans

Internet! Something amazing has happened. Something magical.

My garden has begun to produce food. From pebbles and dirt, we have created life!

And, you know, by life, I mostly mean beans. Interestingly, that picture above? I took that yesterday, utterly shocked at what I was seeing, because until about a minute and a half before I took that picture, I was convinced that those plants were, in fact, cucumbers. I didn’t even know that I’d planted beans!

I’m sure that I did–my mother gave me some seeds, and I picked some up at random places, and you know how it is, there’s dirt and little round things and please, like I’m going to think about labeling them? So I’m sure that at some point, we intentionally planted beans, but I have to admit that I was pretty confused for a minute. You know: “Man, those are really weird-looking cucumbers. I didn’t know that they started out so small and spindly and bean-like! …oh.”

squash

In other garden-related news, I have a tiny baby squash! It looks…like a little yellowish lump. This was an impulse buy at Home Depot, and it was helpfully labeled “table squash”, so I have no idea what it really is, other than some sort of hard-shelled squash. We tend to go through a lot of squash, so I’m sure that this will be welcomed, regardless of what it is.

watermelon

Also, in the course of less than a week, the watermelon went from looking like it was about to give up the ghost to having half a dozen bright yellow flowers on it! (I thought that these might be cucumber, too, but Google tells me otherwise.)

chard

There’s also swiss chard. I’ve realized, though, that while it’s really pretty, I have no idea how to tell when it should be eaten, nor do I have any idea how to prepare it. It’ll probably be lunch-hour research at work tomorrow, (unless people have helpful thoughts, which they should feel free to leave in the comments,) but in the meantime, I liked the picture.

Which reminds me–do you guys find the pictures here to be annoyingly sized? I realized the other day that while I’m working on a widescreen, it’s possible that not everyone else is, and they’re seeing my poor blog all squished up. Also, no one uses dial-up anymore, right? I mean, I get broadband on my phone, so it seems sort of unlikely to me that anyone’s still using dial-up. (Anyone, here, means people who are actually reading this, which I believe is now seven or eight of you. Makes me all tingly! My point is that I hope that I’m not crashing anyone’s 56.6K modem.)

This is a quality blog with lots of technical, precise writing, obviously. Where else can you find potentially squished pictures, yellowish lumps, and bean-like cucumbers?*

*Yes, I’m sure that somewhere out there, there’s some sort of porn about this, but I’m happier not knowing.
