Autumnal

autumn

Okay, I realize that the picture above is not the most interesting or well-composed photo, but you know what? Turns out that it’s hard to take pictures while you’re driving! Probably also unsafe and possibly illegal, so, you know, maybe don’t do that.

But look at it! Look at the beautiful red foliage! You can see a little bit of yellow on the tree behind the red one, as well.

I’m so excited, I really can’t even say. I hate summer and sun and brightness and bugs, so I spend most of the summer longing for autumn. Is it possible to get seasonal affective disorder in reverse, so you’re miserable all summer and happy all winter? That’s me. Freezing temperatures, grey mornings, and frosted lawns are totally my thing.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful for summer. Without summer, I wouldn’t have any tomatoes, or raspberry jam, or–well, or most foods, really. It’s sort of the cats vs dogs thing, though: I just don’t understand how anyone could look at summer and winter side by side and still say “oh, yeah. Summer, all the way.” It’s hot and sticky, and people smell bad, and there are bugs, and you’re expected to spend lots of time outdoors. No thank you.

In autumn-related news, we had squash and apple soup for supper–the first soup we’ve had in quite a while. I love soup season, and am hoping to have some chili over the weekend. Also, I’ve finished the first of my variegated, braid-cabled socks. I’ll cast on for the second one tomorrow and hopefully finish it in fairly short order–I’m ready for it to be time for wool socks!

For the last few nights, we’ve gone to bed with the windows still open, but plenty of blankets. It’s been wonderful to wake up in the morning, the room cool but the blankets wonderfully inviting. Of course, that might explain why we’ve been nearly late, nearly late, and actually late to Maura’s school this week, but so it goes. It’s worth the inconvenience to linger in bed for just one minute more.

  • Good picture, especially considering you were driving!
I too suffer from a mild form of this reverse-SAD. I think we should get a good week – maybe a week and a half – of oppressive heat (by which I mean higher than 80) per year. Then the small people can swim and be happy. But then it’s time for apples and punkins and Concord grapes and CHILI, dammit!
    And blankies :-)

  • Autumn is my absolutely favorite time of year! Same on summer – think I want it, then it get HOT!
This year was weird – turned 50 and couldn’t handle the heat at all. Especially since, i am normally always cold. don’t mind cold tho – love warm textured clothing.
Soup – love soup – favorite things to make – soup and bread – love bread, don’t know how to say that with all the emotions needed

ok – on we go – think i’ll make bread

Yay Autumn, I’m so excited to see the leaves turning already. This is my absolute favorite time of year. Now if it wern’t going to rain all week (as they are saying it’s supposed to) I would be even more thrilled. cause then I might be able to walk around down town Brecksville and get ice cream and wander around the second hand book store.
