Pretty Girl

We took this about two weeks ago down on the riverfront. Stupid pretty not-baby. She’ll be seven in three weeks.

And yes, she always looks like she’s smirking. Because, you know, she’s indulging her crazy, embarrassing mother. I swear, sometimes I think that she’s going on thirteen, not seven. I have no idea what I’ll do when she’s actually an adolescent.

Unrelated, but does anyone have any non-scary, non-stupid movies to recommend? I would prefer things that do not involve romance as the primary plot and do not involve marriage as the happy ending. She loves Monsters vs. Aliens, pretty much any Barbie movie she can get her hands on, and Kung Fu Panda. Quest for Camelot was also well-received. Anyone?

So…not the Princess Bride, then? What about Monsters Inc or Finding Nemo? Labrynth, Never Ending Story, Goonies – teach her movie history (Goonies might be a little scary? Actually, they all might be…) Any Roald Dahl movie. School of Rock. Wallace and Grommitt, Freaky Friday, Toy Story.

Monsters Inc and Finding Nemo are in regular rotation, as are Wallace and Grommit.

School of Rock is an awesome idea, and I sort of wonder if she would do Princess Bride. (I realize that it defies my no-marriage rule, but it’s a classic!)

Freaky Friday hadn’t occurred to me, but I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen it, either!

…I’m kind of really surprised that you let her watch Barbie movies?

How about– Flight of the Navigator, The Explorers, The Emperor’s New Groove? When I was seven I just watched Weird Al’s video biography and Girls Just Want to Have Fun over and over again, so I am at a bit of a loss. My dad really loved The Journey of Natty Gahn, isn’t that the right age, ish?

The Barbie movies happened by accident–she was watching them at daycare and, I think, my mom’s house.

I actually find the Barbie movies much less offensive than Disney movies. I was pleasantly surprised that in the handful I’ve seen (or read the novelization of–blech), Barbie has wild adventures and there’s usually a boy who’s interested in her, but none of the happy endings involve marriage or even relationships. I’m sure that this isn’t universal, but M’s current loves are Barbie and the Diamond Castle (the ending is Barbie and her friend rescue the girl in the mirror, and then they ditch the princes and the muses and go home to live together in their cottage, growing flowers and singing songs about how they have the same dreams and share their hearts) and Barbie and the Three Musketeers (the ending is that the prince asks Barbie out, but there’s serious Musketeer business to attend to, so she brushes him off and rides off on her pony).

So, um, I have body image issues with Barbie, but she’s less patronizing/preachy/racist than Strawberry Shortcake, and she doesn’t marry some prince who she’s never spoken to like in the Disney movies. All of this to say that on the list of horrible children’s movies, I find Barbie a lot less offensive and shitty than Disney/Bratz/Strawberry Shortcake.

  • I know this is a bit late but hey I’m thinking a head to christmas. Has she seen Coraline? I wouldn’t call it a childrens movie but she might like it, there’s an alternate universe and the “mother” figure in the alternate universe starts out too good to be true and turns evil by the end. it’s very strange. just an idea. also becuause of the incredible small knit things in that movie you might want to get it for yourself insead. Just saying.
