Things that Meghan Loves

A list.

  • Caramels. I made salted, chocolate-covered caramels on Thursday night, and they were awesome. They’re definitely on the things-to-make-for-Christmas list.

  • Sleeping cats. I love how they get all stupid and floppy, like they’re made out of Slinkies and Jell-o.

I also like that our kitties tend to sleep in piles. Even the standoffish ones who don’t really care for other cats end up sleeping in groups. It’s pretty adorable. Piles of kitties are also excellent footwarmers.

  • This article in which scientists wonder if beings from the future are sabotaging the LHC. I realize that it’s sort of out there, but I don’t really care, because sabotage from the future is the very best kind of failure.

  • We’re going to start watching Mad Men tomorrow! I’m very excited about this, as many people who I love and trust have told me I will love it. If it turns out that I do not love it, well, at least I bought special fancy Amish-grown popcorn to have while we watch. (Also, Amish-grown fancy popcorn? Surprisingly cheap. Like, $1.50 for a pound cheap. Awesome.)

  • Eggplant. Holy crap, do I love eggplant. I want to eat bowl upon bowl of it–fried, roasted, smushed up into baba ganoush, over pasta, whatever. I’m not even hungry, and I want it right this minute.

  • The Goodyear Blimp.

We live just outside of Akron, so the Goodyear Blimp is often audible from our house. I’m not sure what it does around here, just buzzing about, but I find it weirdly soothing.

  • We’re getting a dog! And by “getting” I mean that we’re waiting for animal control to call us and tell us to come pick him up.

His name’s Basil (like the name, not the herb) and he should be here by Tuesday. We (well, Nick and I, since Maura doesn’t know yet) are really excited. I didn’t think that a dog was ever something that I’d want, but a few weeks ago I started thinking that I really missed having a dog. Nick admitted that he’d wanted one for a while, and then a few days later we were at animal control, looking for the perfect dog.

We don’t know much about him, other than that he about a year old, a terrier mix, and pretty mellow. He hasn’t barked even once in the several hours I’ve spent with him, and he’s very patient about being poked, prodded, and bathed. I think that he’s had people before–he seems to be at least sort of housebroken, and also seems to respond to sit. We’ll see how it goes when he comes home.

I’m excited because my workplace is dog friendly. Nick works from home and has cats all day–I get to take the dog to work so that I have a friend, too.
