Sea Change

And, just like that, we’ve gone from late summer to winter.

Things have changed very abruptly this year. We went from gorgeous, brightly colored trees to bare branches almost overnight. When I leave work now, it’s already half dark.

I’m the parent of a seven year old. I’m quite certain that I didn’t order a child who was this big, but it happened anyhow. She informs me that I’m not allowed to stop feeding her, nor am I allowed to make her shrink. So far, being the parent of a seven year old is very much like being the parent of a six year old, only with more snottiness and bad attitude. I was sort of hoping that seven would be easier than six, but it looks like that’s not going to be the case.

Next up is Thanksgiving, and then Christmas. Seven weeks until Christmas, you guys, and between now and then, there’s not only Thanksgiving, but also my mother’s and Nick’s birthdays. (Which–really, very inconvenient. They’re December 18 and 16, respectively, and in my next family, I am only selecting parents, children, and partners who have birthdays between March and October.)

This is how much of my gift-giving knitting I’ve gotten done so far: none of it. Similarly, this is how much gift-giving candy making I’ve gotten done so far: none of it. I always swear that this is going to be the year where things happen in a timely fashion and I don’t end up stressed out at the last minute, but everything goes so fast at this time of year that it never quite happens.

Still, for all the rushing, I can’t help but be a little pleased. I love winter, love the snow, love twinkling white lights and staying up late knitting. I like curling up in bed with blankets and tea and hanging out all evening, and I like having an excuse to stay home and not do things. In the summer, I always feel guilty for not wanting to go places and do things and see people. The refrain of “but it’s so nice out!” wears on my nerves–just because it’s nice doesn’t mean that I want to be social.

Winter can bring it. I’m all set to stay home and make cookies.

  • Hi Meghan!
I bumped into your blog thanks to Adam from Throwing Quarters… I can relate to a lot of what you’re writing about and truly enjoy the sarcastic bitchy tone you’re using – definitely my cup of tea! I’d love to “follow” you but i can’t seem to find that “option” in your blog. Is it at all possible? I havenĀ“t finished to read it all yet but did you find out what you planted?? haha! I’m a chili-planting freak myself and have the same problem: no idea which one is which!
Let me know about the “following” thingy! Thanks :)
    Mathilde
